Johnny Friedlaender is one of the pioneers of modern color etching. He gave this difficult artistic technique a new, contemporary form of expression that combined tradition with innovation. In his workshop in Paris, many important artists were introduced to etching. Johnny Friedlaender's work encompassed both abstract and concrete themes and also attached great importance to music. Music has always translated the visual into the acoustic, Friedlaender explained his inclination.

Friedländer had an eventful life. After being held prisoner in a concentration camp for two years, he emigrated first to Czechoslovakia and later to Paris, where he managed to make a living from his art. He taught many well-known artists such as Hans Brög, René Carcan, Bettina von Arnim, Karin Luts, Alfred Pohl, Ulrike Ottinger, Wim Wenders and Ilse Willers before he died in Paris in 1992.
